201&202 Conference Room: Nagasato Uchida 内田 長郷
BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
Nagasato Uchida 内田 長郷 Nagasato Uchida was born on April 11, 1950 in Tokyo, Japan. He attended Gakushuin Primary School through High School, and he flew alone to the USA in 1966 to see the world outside of Japan. He attended Kent School in Connecticut, where he overcame the language barrier to excel not only in academics but also in athletics. His basketball MVP trophy and photographs are still at the school gym today, in which you see one skinny Asian guy among the huge American guys. Nagasato always spoke fondly of those years at Kent as the most life-shaping time of his life. He graduated from Kent School in 1968 and moved to Boston, where he earned a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in 1972. Everyone agrees that he was a true geek except that he honored friendship, which his friend from Harvard can testify by sharing the fun stories from their road trip across the Europe. After MIT, he moved to California and earned a MS degree in EE from Stanford Graduate School in 1973. He went back to the east coast to work at AMP Inc. in Harrisburg, PA and got married to Keiko in 1973 in Hershey, PA. then returned to Japan in 1975. They were blessed with 2 daughters, Ayaka and Crea. He was always athletic and healthy, playing in local baseball team and skiing down the slope with his daughter in his arms. But in 1986, he was diagnosed with Leukemia (CML). Through chemo therapy and dire medical conditions, doctors and nurses were impressed that Nagasato never complained or lost heart. They finally found a perfect match in his own brother, and he received a Bone Marrow Transplant in 1987. He later shared with a friend that he won the battle against leukemia through his determination to not give up on life and also through the prayers of his family and friends. As his body regained strength over time, he started up another business through Lantech Corporation. He joined Tokyo Ebisu Rotary Club to maintain interaction with people outside of his field. He often expressed the joy of being in an interdisciplinary environment and being exposed to a bigger world. Later in his life, while still running his own business, he began exploring other “untouched” areas of interests such as traditional Japanese wood crafts, restoring 100 years old house in Itou, zipping the Izu coast line with Fairlady Z. Even with a body that was never as healthy as before, Nagasato always sought to enjoy the fullness of life, especially with 3 grandchildren. He left a legacy of working hard, always desiring to do what is right, investing richly in education, being devoted to family, living courageously as a husband and a father, treasuring friendship and people, thinking innovatively, never giving up until you give your best, and dreaming big. He is remembered as a man of character and forward-thinking by his families and friends all over the world. He has inspired many to put their hearts into everything they do in life, which he did tirelessly even after the bone marrow transplant. Although Nagasato never visited ICU in person during his life, we felt that ICU expresses his desire for a place of learning that cultivates talent towards “world peace,” which is the goal of the Rotary Club. This conference room shall be dedicated to the memory of Nagasato Uchida, and he will be always remembered by all of us. Nagasato, we love you!
