5F Lounge: Hong Kong Chinese Alumni Association

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
Hong Kong Chinese Alumni Association 香港留学生会
Befitting the name of the University, from its first academic year (1953-54), ICU had had a group of Chinese students from Hong Kong among its non-Japanese student body. The core of this student group was selected by a strict screening committee chaired by the late Dr. Yung Chi-tung, former president of Chung Chi College in Hong Kong. They were awarded a full scholarship to study at ICU by the United Board of Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA). Based on this program there were an average of five Chinese students from Hong Kong a year in the beginning years of the fifties and sixties.

With the subsequent changes in the economic and political situation in Asia, this UBCHEA program was scaled down and finally terminated in 1982 when the last two UBCHEA scholars were selected. Between 1983 and 1995, however, the selection committee, then chaired by the late Dr. Tam Kwok-chi, who himself was a UBCHEA scholar, continued sending students from Hong Kong with scholarship funding from ICU.

All this while, however, there were also other Chinese students from Hong Kong, Taiwan and in Japan who enrolled in ICU paying for their studies with own funds.

Irrespective of the source of funding, the Chinese students, who studied and graduated from ICU, are most appreciative of the Liberal Arts education they received which prepared them well to become useful citizens of the world, no matter where they went for further studies, work and settling down.

On the eve of the 60th anniversary of the dedication of the university, representatives of the Hong Kong Chinese alumni of different classes have gathered in this lounge for their first Homecoming and to give thanks to ICU for all that they are today.
