大学で創立記念日を
祝うのはなんのためだろうか？
使命の共有という重要な問題に、
再び我々自身を向かわせるためである。
Why do we celebrate anniversaries at colleges and universities?
To recommit ourselves to our shared mission and
to take another good look at where we are today.
ICUは60歳の記念日を迎えて、一個の人間と同じく、真の成熟に達したところなのだ。
ICU has reached its 60th birthday, and just like when a real person reaches 60,
it has reached the fullness of maturity.
ICUの物語は、20世紀における教育上の奇跡といえる。
それは、自らの恐怖を克服し、危険を冒しながら
生きていくという物語だ。
創立者たちは1950年代の日本で、戦いではなく和解という険しい道を選んだ。
孤立することを拒み、日本と日本以外の国の間に、平和の橋を架けたのだ。
ICU’s story represents one of the
educational miracles of the last century.
It’s a story of overcoming your fears and taking great risks
for the sake of a greater good.
In 1950’s Japan, ICU’s founders chose the difficult road of reconciliation rather than conflict.
They rejected isolation, and built bridges both within Japan and beyond.
真理を探求するということは、
我々を知的、社会的、文化的に自由にすることであり、
神の約束を守ることである。
ICUには、キリストのメッセージに根ざした目標があった。真理を探求し続けるという使命だ。
This is the meaning of a liberal education –
fulfilling God’s promise that seeking truth will in fact set us free
– intellectually, socially and culturally.
ICU had a higher goal, rooted in Jesus’ message from John’s Gospel; ICU was committed to seeking truth.
ナショナリズムの恐怖にさらされた後でもICUの開拓者たちは、理念と実践の両面において
「国際的」な場を作り上げた。
世界人権宣言の考えに基づき、学生たちが地球市民であると考えることは、1950年代の日本で偏狭な視点を克服するための野心的な試みだった。
ICU’s pioneers had witnessed the horrors of unbridled nationalism, and they built a place
that is international in vision and in practice.
ICU challenged students to think of themselves as global citizens, sharing a universal declaration of human rights.
In the Japan of the 1950's, this commitment to overcome insularity and to be international was aspirational.
幻（ビジョン）があれば、
人は栄える。
初代学長の湯浅八郎博士は、しばしば旧約聖書の「箴言」を引いて、
「幻（ビジョン）のないところでは、民は堕落する」と言った。
ICUが献学60周年を迎えた今、この逆もまた真であることが明らかだ。
Where there is vision, the people flourish!
Your first president, Dr. Hashiro Yuasa,
often cited the Old Testament's Book of Proverbs:
"Where there is no vision, the people perish."
As ICU celebrates its 60th anniversary,
we know that the converse of this proverb is also true:
where there is vision, the people flourish!
