グローバル化が一段と加速する中で、我々を取り巻く環境は、かつてない大きな変化にさらされています。これまで途上国と扱われてきた国々が世界の枢要な政治的・経済的大国として実力をつけ、世界の政治経済地図を塗り替えつつあります。他方、依然として貧困にあえぐ多くの国々や地域の状況はテロや紛争の火種となってむしろ深刻化しています。また、環境問題に対して地球規模で取り組まなければ人類の持続的な発展が困難になっていることも明らかです。このような状況下、日本の地位と役割も急激に変化していることは、自明です。
Increasing speed of globalization has engendered an unprecedented transformative process throughout the world. Former developing countries now wielding enormous political and economic power are reshaping the geopolitical landscape. On the other hand, many countries still suffer from poverty, which has aggravated terrorism and regional conflict. Unless worldwide measures are devised for environmental problems, we cannot secure sustainable development. Accordingly, Japan's position and role in the world is changing rapidly.
60年前に献学された国際基督教大学は、神と人とに奉仕する人材の育成を通じて平和な世界の構築に貢献することを目指してきました。今日大きな変化のただ中にあって更に献学の理念を深めていくには、いま何が大切かを改めて問い直し、それに必要な自己改革を行い、ヴィジョンを新たに設定する必要があります。本学はここ数年来さまざまな改革を実施しつつありますが、それは、新しい時代の潮流の中で本学の設立の理念を実現したいという決意の表明なのです。
Ever since ICU was founded 60 years ago, the university has aimed to build peace in the world by the cultivation of capable persons to serve God and humankind. To pursue this founding philosophy further, amidst the phenomenal changes occurring today, we must reconsider our priorities, carry out necessary reform, and establish a new vision. ICU's recent reforms express the determination to realize the university's founding philosophy in the new era.
2008年に実施した教養学部改革は、広い視野をもって学びを始め、同時に専門の基礎をしっかりと学ぶ「リベラルアーツの深化」を進めるものであり、まさに21世紀の要請に対するICUの応答であります。2010年に導入した大学院の改革もその延長線上に新たな一歩を踏み出したものです。もちろんこれらの改革が実を結ぶには今後とも、不断の努力が必要であることは改めて申すまでもありません。
The College of Liberal Arts underwent academic reform in 2008, to enhance learning in liberal arts, enabling students to study across a wide academic spectrum as well as obtain the basics in specialized fields. This was ICU's solution to the demands of the 21st century. The reform in the Graduate School, implemented in 2010, follows this philosophy in taking a new step forward. Needless to say, we must dedicate our ceaseless efforts to bring these reforms to fruition.
このようなリベラルアーツ教育改革を効果的に遂行していくためには、学生、教員、職員が真にグローバルな環境の中でface to faceの対話をとおして学びや研究を行うことが不可欠です。本学が教学改革と同時に、恵まれた自然環境の中に、学生寮、研究者寮、国際会議施設、食堂施設を建設しようとしてきたのは，真のリベラルアーツ教育を強化するには、それにふさわしいface to face でグローバルな対話（dialogue）が可能な教育環境を整えることが、不可欠であると認識しているからにほかなりません。
In order to carry out reform in our liberal arts education effectively, person to person dialogue among students, faculty and staff is indispensible for learning and research in a truly global environment. Concurrent with curricular reform, ICU has constructed new student dormitories, accommodation for researchers, international conference rooms, and a cafeteria set in the university's beautiful natural environment. This reflects the recognition that interpersonal dialogue is crucial for a sound and effective liberal arts education.
献学60周年にあたり、これらの夢を実現するために節目となる2013年を中心に、2011年4月から5年間にわたって本学ならではの記念事業を計画し実施いたしました。
To commemorate the 60th Anniversary in 2013, we initiated the celebration from April 2011 and completed the five-year project in March 2016, organizing events that reflect the values of ICU.
