21世紀のリベラルアーツ教育の諸問題と展望
「献学60周年記念事業の一環として、ホームカミング・イヤー記念シンポジウム『21世紀を拓くリベラルアーツ』が、「リベラルアーツ21の会」との共催 により、10月12日（土）ダイアログハウス国際会議室で開催されました。「リベラルアーツ21の会」は、「21世紀を拓くリベラルアーツ教育に関して研究し、さらには日本、地球社会、21世紀という視点で提言してゆく」ことを目的としたプロジェクトで、14人の世話人はすべてICUの卒業生もしくは ICUで教鞭をとった方々です。」
日比谷潤子学長は冒頭の挨拶の中で、このシンポジウムが献学60周年のホームカミング・イベントとして行われることの意義と、次の60年をめざしてMiddlebury CollegeとICUが協力関係を築いてゆくことの重要性を語りました。
Today there is an even greater recognition of the diversity in mankind and its cultures, yet we also witness firsthand an outstanding degree of rivalry between the power of nature and the power of the sciences and technology. Surely we expect young people in the 21st century to study diverse subjects in natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, to clarify the issues that confront us, to acquire skills to address those issues, and, furthermore, to make efforts with an indomitable human spirit. These are the very things students learn in a liberal arts education. However there are many challenges, financial and otherwise, to liberal arts education and its core system of small classes. At the same time there are demands in the new century for early specialization in education and other imposing hurdles to overcome.
最初のセッション「21世紀のリベラルアーツ教育の諸課題と展望」では、アメリカのリベラルアーツ・カッレジの中でも、常に全米ランキング 5位以内にランクされるMiddlebury CollegeのJeffrey Cason（Dean of International Programs）が基調講演を行い、柔軟性、適合性、個別性、協働性を軸に、Middlebury CollegeとICUとの比較とその協力関係にも触れながら、21世紀のリベラルアーツを展望しました。
つづく「ビジネスとリベラルアーツ」では元富士ゼロックス社長の有馬利男氏（ICU卒10期生）が企業マネジメントの観点から、リーダーに必要とされる資質・能力とそれらを育むリベラルアーツ教育との関連を、自らの体験を踏まえて語りました。
"Liberal Arts 21" is a project to study how liberal arts education will play a defining role in the 21st century and put forward ideas from the perspective of Japan, global society and the 21st century. As participants in liberal arts education, the project will be relevant for many of ICU's graduates.
第三セッション「大学院およびプロフェッショナルスクールとリベラルアーツ」では国際連合難民高等弁務官事務所（UNHCR）の小尾尚子氏（ICU卒26期生）が、その仕事を支えるスキルを4C（Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity）として披露し、それらがICUのリベラルアーツ教育が目標としていることの類似性を指摘しました。また、アキュサリュート高輪院長の瀬尾港二氏（ICU卒28期生）は、ICUの理学科（生物学専修）卒業後、北京語学院中医漢語クラスから針灸の世界へ進み、日中の医療機関を経て現職に至るまでの経歴と、その進路の決定とICUのリベラルアーツ教育で育まれたものとの関わりについて語りました。
最後の「21世紀を切り開くICUのリベラルアーツ」では、森本あんり学務副学長が、アフリカ系アメリカ人公民権運動を指導したマルティン・ルーサー・キング・ジュニアの暗殺前日の演説を動画で紹介しつつ、人生において一人ひとりが自らの使命を深く自覚して決断をする時があることを指摘しつつ、その決断の根底を支えるものとして、リベラルアーツ教育の意義を強調しました。
パネルディスカッションでは、セッション毎に発題を受けて学部生や大学院生をも含むパネリストたちが議論を展開。多様な観点からのさまざまな指摘が、21世紀のリベラルアーツを浮き彫りにしたシンポジウムとなりました。
