All teach, and all learn; all serve, and all are served.

Robert Siekmann, a pioneer of American service learning,
recommended that these concepts are all a part of good service learning.

Service learning should be about building
a higher-order partnership that is transformational.

Transformational relationships allow all partners to grow and
change because of the deeper commitments involved in such a program.
This is a picture of service learning that is complex, multifaceted and challenging.

Students must connect their civic learning
objectives with their own personal growth.

A key component of a service learning program is
that students are required to make the connection
between their activity in the community and their academic learning objectives.

Service learning has students not only serving to learn,
but learning to serve.

This is what service learning does well and better than any other pedagogy.
Students think about, consider and analyze what their role is in society.

Service learning is important not only to a
student’s education but also to society itself.

Service learning provides students with the
ideas of social responsibility and social justice.
It engages them in the society they are about to become full-fledged members of.
