The Path to World Peace
− What should ICU graduates be doing?

ICUでは入学時に「学生宣誓」にサインをする。
「平和の実現」はICUにとって大きな意味を持つテーマだ。
All ICU students sign the Student Pledge upon entering ICU.
The realization of peace is a concept that holds great meaning for ICU.
「学生宣誓」は世界人権宣言に則っている。この伝統は今でも受け継がれており、
学生宣誓は大学で大切に保管されている。
The Student Pledge is based upon the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,
and the university considers the continuation of that tradition very important.
専門家でない人こそ平和について考え、
意見を述べるべきではないだろうか。
「平和」であること、それを維持することが、一般市民の間で語られるべきだと感じている。
「平和」は日常的にはあまり意識しないものだが、何かが起きると一瞬にして失われてしまう。
Because of the very fact that I’m not a specialist,
I should be thinking about peace and
discussing my opinions with others.
I feel that regular people should discuss the idea of peace and how to maintain it.
While we may not be conscious of it on a daily basis,
something could happen to make it disappear in an instant.

自らも3.11後を生きる当事者として、
コミュニティ回復のために
「希望の実験」を積み重ねること。
それこそが、大災害が続き、戦争や紛争の絶えない世界で、
平和を実現するモデルになると信じている。
As people living in a post-3/11 world,
we can all play a central role in this
“experiment for hope”
that is helping rebuild communities.
Our world is still full of catastrophic war and conflict,
but I believe this work can play a small but important role as a model for bringing about peace.

ママ友たちが震災を機に、政治や社会問題一般に対して、
真剣に目を向けだした様子に感銘を受けた。
彼女たちは憲法にも関心を持つだろうと確信し、
改憲の現実味を感じて勉強会に誘ったのが「憲法カフェ」の始まりだ。
I was impressed to see other mothers turning
their attention to political and social issues
after the events of the earthquake and tsunami.
I thought these mothers might also be interested in learning about the constitution,
and asked some whether they would be interested in studying the constitution
and the expected amendments. This was how the Constitution Café was born.

ICUという存在自体が
「希望の実験」ではないか。
ここで学び、何かに取り組むことによって希望が見えてくる。
学生たちにも「希望」を持ち、社会に出て活躍してほしい。
ICU is also an experiment for hope.
When students learn here, when they start to tackle issues, I see hope arise.
I hope that the students will go into the world and act with hope in their hearts.
