病んだことのない医者は、
いい臨床医にはなれない。
A doctor who has never been sick will never be a good clinician
人の痛みを理解するためには感性を育てなければならない
感性が高いということが、リベラルアーツには一番大切なこと
それは、シンパシー（Sympathy）ではなくエンパシー（Empathy）だ。
Sensitivity must be nurtured to understand the pain of others.
To be acutely sensitive is of great importance to the liberal arts.
This is not sympathy, but empathy.
教養が十分に教えられないままに卒業できるという、
日本の現状を早く改革しなくてはならない。
アメリカでは医学だけでなく、幅広い知識と教養を身につけ、8年以上かかってやっと医師を名乗れる。
Currently one can graduate in Japan
without receiving a complete education –
this needs to be quickly changed.
Before one can be called a doctor in the United States,
one spends eight years learning medicine, but also obtains knowledge of a broad range of topics.
愛というものは必ず犠牲を伴う
かつて聖路加国際病院のナースが羽織っていた濃紺のマントの裏地は、
赤い色をしていた。
それを見て、愛には血の出るような犠牲が伴うと感じた。
愛することができないのは、赦すことができないからだ。
Love is always accompanied by sacrifice.
The dark blue capes that nurses once wore at
St. Luke’s International Hospital had a red lining.
When you saw them, you could feel that love carried with it a sacrifice
that required blood to be shed. You cannot love if you cannot forgive.
本来の人間性とはどういうものであるかが、職業と関係なくわかる。
そういう教養が本当のリベラルアーツだ。
評論家で医学博士でもあった故加藤周一さんはリベラルアーツの最高峰にいる。彼の言葉は、完全なリベラルアーツを整えた人でないと書けない言葉だ。
A true liberal arts education provides the understanding
that what is fundamental about humanity does not depend on one’s occupation.
The late Suichi Kato, a literary critic and medical doctor, stood at the pinnacle of liberal arts.
His words could not have been written by someone who did not personify the liberal arts.
平和とは、究極の愛の形である。
大きな国こそ、人間の命を大切にする国であることを実証することが重要だ。
Peace is nothing but the ultimate form of love.
It is important for big nations to prove that human life is precious.
