日本全体、もしかすると
世界的に文学部が弱体化している。
Across the whole of Japan, and probably the world,
literature faculties are shrinking.
ICUでも文学を専攻する人はどんどん減っている。
昔は英語を勉強するには英文学しかなかったが、
今は英語を学ぶためのさまざまな学問が発達したため、英文学に頼る必要がなくなった。
The number of students majoring in literature is steadily declining. In the past,
if you wanted to study English, English Literature was your only option.
Now however, a number of different subjects have emerged in which
students can communicate using English, so students who want to learn the language
no longer have English literature as their only option..

身体感覚と言語感覚のどちらが欠けても、
文学というのはおそらく成立しない。
文学との出会いとは一冊の本との出会いではなく、生活や人生など、
身体感覚と密接に結びついたところで選び取られるものではないか。
I don’t think literature can be brought into existence
without both a physical and a linguistic awareness.
Literature is not just about reading a book – it is about life and living,
those places closely tied to physical awareness.

自分が生きているということに直結して
言葉が立ち現れた。
ICUで読書会をやっていて、ある時突然、身体感覚に訴えかけてくるように
内容を理解できたことがあった。それが最初の本格的な文学体験となった。
Words loom over us,
directly connected to how we live.
When I was part of a reading club at ICU, one day,
all of a sudden I was able to understand it in a way that
appealed to my physical awareness. That was my first true literary experience.

対話的に言葉が交わされていく場こそが文学だ。
自分の体を通じて、身体感覚の中で得た対話的に交わされる言葉の価値を
自分はずっと出発点にしているし、そこから出ることは多分ないだろう。
Literature is a place where words are exchanged
in the form of dialogue.
My starting point is the value of words exchanged as dialogue,
something I gained through my own physical experience—through my own physical awareness—
and I don’t think I will ever give that up.

作家をつくることが文学教育ではない。
大学で文学を学ぶのは教養を高めるため。
教養というのは、日々生きていく中での生き方や言葉、ものの考え方や思考、
その人が生きている姿すべてのこと。
Literature departments are not there
to churn out writers.
The goal of studying literature at university is
above all to become more learned.
Learning is reflected in the way a person lives, their speech, the way they think and their ideas.
