古代ギリシャにおける劇は道徳や政治の問題を
取り上げたものが多く、合唱隊である“コロス”は、
市民と観客の代表だった。

Many plays in ancient Greece dealt with moral and political issues,
and the chorus represented the people – the audience.

当時のアテネには限定的だが民主主義が存在した。
ステージ上で繰り広げられる合唱などは政治プロセスの一部であり、
教育的な意味合いもあったのではないだろうか。

Athens had a limited form of democracy at the time.
The chorus and their commentary on the social
and ethical dilemmas being laid out on stage
were an integral part of the political process
and may have served an educational purpose, too.

自然科学だけでは
環境研究の課題を解決しきれない。
理系と文系両方のアプローチが必要だ。

「環境」には幅広いトピックが含まれていて、
環境研究には、多くの社会環境論的な要素も加わっている。

Issues relating to environmental studies cannot be tackled
through the use of only science.
A dual approach involving both the sciences and
the humanities is necessary.

The “environment” covers an incredibly broad range of topics,
and there are also a great number of sociological elements to environmental studies.

初代学長の湯浅八郎は
「明日の大学」を作ることを
めざしていた。

戦争は必要ないという理想に立ち、
現代のトラブルの原因は物質社会の発展により、
心を基礎とした世界を放棄したことにあると考えていたのだ。

Founder Hachiro Yuasa aimed to build
“The University of Tomorrow.”

It would stand for the ideal that war was unnecessary and
that the source of modern troubles lies in the abandonment of a world based in the heart,
in order to advance a world based on things.

学校としてのICUという発想は戦争の悲劇から生まれ、
真実のみが人類と国家を
自由にできるという命題に捧げられる。

過去には戦争の原因となったであろう諸問題を、
平和的手段を用いて解決する世界の構築に役立てるというコンセプトがある。

The idea of ICU as an institution was
born out of tragedies of war and dedicated to the proposition
that only the truth shall make men and nations free.

These concept was to help build a world in which peaceful means are used to surmount issues that,
in the past, would have resulted in war.

和解の証として寄贈された
マクリーン通りの桜は、
その可憐な花とともに
平和のシンボルとなっている。

苗木に近い状態で寄贈された桜だが、今では春になると桜のトンネルを作っている。
ICUの理念にぴったりのシンボルなのだ。

The cherry blossom trees that line MacLean Avenue
were donated as an act of reconciliation,
and those trees and their delicate flowers now stand as
symbols of peace.

The cherry blossom trees were almost seedlings when they were donated,
but their long branches now stretch across the avenue to create a tunnel of cherry blossom every spring. They are a perfect symbol of the philosophy of ICU.
