4年間の学びを達成するために、
アカデミックな英語を身につけること、
リベラルアーツを「英語を通して」
身につけることがELAの目的である。
The ELA has two objectives: to help students
acquire the academic English they need to succeed over their
four years of university, and to provide them with a
liberal arts education through English.
日本語と英語の両方が使用されるICUは「バイリンガルコミュニティ」だ。
ELAは、そこに参加するための英語力を修得するプログラムなのである。
The ICU campus offers a bilingual community in which
both English and Japanese are used, and the ELA provides students with the abilities
they need to participate in that community.

「英語が得意な学生が集うICUだからできる」
と言われるが、それは違う。
成果を上げているのは「ICUだから」ではなく、学生一人ひとりの努力と教員の工夫によるもの。
People often say that ICU attracts students
who are already skilled at English, but that’s not true.
We get these results not because
“we are ICU,” but because of the efforts made by each and every student and
because of the ingenuity of our instructors.

チュートリアルは「個人指導」
「サポート」「自律の育成」という
3つのキーワードで成立している。
自ら学ぶ姿勢を育むとともに、
クリティカルシンキングを伸ばすことにも重点を置いている。
教員は会話を通して考えるように学生に促し、
学生が自ら解決策を導けるようにしているのだ。
ELA tutorials are conducted
with three key objectives in mind:
individual guidance,
support, and self-development.
Students are taught to learn on their own, with a large focus placed on improving their critical thinking skills.
Instructors engage the students in conversation, encouraging them to think over problems and guiding them towards resolving issues on their own.

「リベラルアーツ、すなわちアカデミックにつながる」
という強い信念をICUの英語教育には感じる。
「クリティカルシンキングなどのアカデミックなことをできるようにする」
という考えで英語教育を行っているところに、ICUの英語教育の意味があると感じる。
I feel that English education at ICU had a really strong focus
on providing a liberals arts, academic environment.
They provide us with critical thinking and other skills that allow us to operate academically in English.
I believe that is where the benefit of an ICU English education lies.

ELAを通して、
物事を明晰にする訓練が
なされているのではないか。
日本の社会で「英語でものを考える」というのは、
違う考え方のフレームを持つということだ。
そのためには、相手の言葉の枠組みで翻訳する必要がある。
Maybe it is because the ELA
provides experience in
thinking more clearly about ideas.
In Japanese society, having the ability to think about things in English implies
that you have a different framework in which to think. One must translate one’s thoughts into the framework of the language spoken by the person you are talking to.
