今年は、説教者に2013年7月に第12代アメリカミシガン州ホープカレッジ学長に就任されたDr. John C. Knappを迎えました。1892年に創立した同校は私立のリベラルアーツカレッジで、ミシガン州ホランドに位置し、少人数教育とChristianityを理念として掲げる点でICUと似ています。同校とICUは、国境を越えてリベラルアーツ教育を推進することを目的とした Global Liberal Arts Allianceのメンバーであることから、Knapp学長の訪日が実現しました。GLAAには推薦がないと加盟できませんが、かねてより連携関係にあるThe College of Woosterより、東アジア2大学目として加盟しないかとの打診を受け、本学の学生にとって、ヨーロッパやアフリカ等の加盟校に留学する機会が広がるとの観点から加盟しました。Knapp学長は、伝統あるリベラルアーツ教育機関相互の交流を通し、高等教育機関の構成員に対し、知性と経験から高等教育のあるべき姿を問い続けてきました。

This year, Hope College President Dr. John C. Knapp delivered a sermon during the commemorative service. He assumed the presidency of this private liberal arts college in July 2013. Located in Holland, Michigan, it resembles ICU as a Christian institution for education in small classes. His visit was the fruit of both colleges being members of the Global Liberal Arts Alliance (GLAA), an organization which seeks to promote liberal arts education around the world. Membership in the GLAA can only be acquired by recommendation; the College of Wooster, with which ICU has a partnership agreement, proposed to recommend ICU as the second college from East Asia to join the GLAA. We gladly accepted the proposal as it would expand opportunities for our students to study at member schools in Europe and Africa etc. Dr. Knapp has constantly pursued the ideal in higher education through exchange with venerable liberal arts institutions.
