ICUがこの地に建ったのは、
ある意味では神意だったに違いない。
It was providential – in a way – that ICU was built here.
キャンパスのある中島飛行機武蔵野工場は、終戦まで消失せずに残った。
建物が全壊することもなく、戦後手をつけられてもいなかった。
学校を作るのに十分な大きさの建物が1棟あったのだ。
The Nakajima Aircraft Musashino Plant was originally located on the ICU campus,
and at war’s end, it remained standing.
The buildings were left untouched, and the site had been abandoned after the war.
It had this fantastic one building...big enough to start a school.
草創期のICUで導入した
画期的なプログラムは、
やがて日本のほかの大学でも
採用されるようになった。
「本の間を歩き回り、拾い読みをして、欲しい本を自分で選ぶことができる」
全館開架式の図書館は、日本初であった。ICUの取り組みはもっと評価されるべきである。
ICU implemented a number of innovative
policies and programs in its early years,
and many of those innovations were adopted by
other Japanese universities.
The open-stack library was the first of its kind in Japan.
With an open stack library, you can wander through,
you can browse, you can pick out the book you want. ICU deserves more credit more its efforts.
全盛期には、入試倍率が20倍近かったこともある。
入試選抜はとても厳しく、学生たちは非常に優秀だった。
In our heyday, we were taking about
1 out of 20 applicants through the
regular examination system.
The examination was very difficult and the students were very, very bright.
ICUのキャンパスは、考古学的な宝物の宝庫だ。
発掘調査をしていると、あらゆる時代の矢じりや斧、文鎮、壺、魚釣りに使う道具、
耳飾りなどが見つかった。中には、日本国外から持ち込まれたと思われる品もあった。
ICU’s campus is a rich source of archaeological treasures.
Excavations on the property resulted in the discovery of arrowheads and axes, stone weights,
pots, fishing gear and earrings from all eras. Some may have even been imported from outside of Japan.
本館はICUのアイコン的イメージとして、
ぜひとも残すべきだと思う。
私にとって、ここが日本の聖地。本館がICUの中核だ。
歴代の卒業生達も、一番心に残るのはこの本館だと思う。
I think we should ensure that the Honkan
becomes the iconic image of ICU.
To me, this is the sacred soil of Japan. This building is the core of ICU.
And I think that every generation of students will see
this as what he or she remembers most.
