歴史をさまざまな画像から読み解いてゆくというこの新しいアプローチは、もともとマサチューセッツ工科大学の授業として、言語学の宮川繁教授と歴史学の ジョン・ダワー教授他多くの教授が協力して開講しているものです。世界の美術館やギャラリーが所蔵している歴史的事件の場面や人物などの画像に注目して、 印刷物、版画、写真、美術作品、商業美術、宣伝広告、絵はがき、時事漫画、映画など様々なジャンルの資料を扱いながら、19世紀半ばから20世紀半ばまでの現代における日本の視覚描写を考察し、そこに反映している時代の意識と、画像がつくりあげてゆく時代の意識を読み解いてゆきます。

History professor John Dower, linguistics professor Shigeru Miyagawa, and many other professors at MIT worked together to develop the new approach of analyzing history based on a wide variety of images. Focusing on images that present the people and places of historical events and that are gathered from the world's museums and galleries, this course uses materials from a wide range of genres (publications, woodblock prints, photographs, art works, commercial art, advertising, postcards, editorial cartoons, movies, etc.) to examine modern Japanese visual representation over the period from the midnineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries and to analyze the era-specific consciousness that created those images and that is reflected in those images.
