通訳になったのは、
英語に関係する仕事をしたいと思ったから。
将来何をしたいかは分からず、ふらふらしている学生だった。
I became an interpreter because
I wanted to do a job related to English. I wambled a bit as a student –
I had no idea what I wanted to do.
同時通訳の先生から声をかけられて助手に。すべて成り行きだったが、
通訳になると汗と涙の世界が広がっていた。
I became an assistant when my simultaneous interpretation teacher asked me to.
It was all spontaneous, but interpretation introduced me to a world of hard work.
ICUはおもちゃ箱みたいな
大学だったと言いたい。
蓋を開けると楽しくて面白いことがたくさん詰まってる。
興味がないものもあるが、いろいろなものが含まれていて楽しい。
そのときは分からなかったが、振り返ると非常に濃密な4年間だった。
ICU was like a big toy box.
When I opened the lid, it was packed full of fun, interesting things.
There were things I wasn’t interested in,
but it was fun because there were so many different things to learn.
I didn’t realize it at the time, but when I look back now
I realize just how densely-packed those four years were.
リベラルアーツの中で、
英語能力は基礎のひとつ。
ICUでは、いろいろなものから面白いと思うことを見つけられる。
そのためには英語能力が必要。グローバルな世の中で、
英語ができないと先に進むことができない時代だ。
English ability is one cornerstone
of the liberal arts.
At ICU, everyone can find something they find interesting from
the many things on offer. English ability is a necessary part of that.
We live in a globalized world, and this is an era in which
you can’t move forward if you can’t speak English.
通訳の仕事とは人と人とをつなぐ
コミュニケーションの仕事。
言葉というのは符号ではなくて
メッセージなのである。
言いたいと思って言えば伝わる。これがコミュニケーションの原点だ。
コミュニケーションとは何かといえば、伝わるかどうか。
発信者と受け手、両者を考えたコミュニケーションでなければならない。
Interpretation is about communication –
about connecting two people with each other.
Words are not code; they are a message.
If you want to say something, you can tell someone and
communicate your idea. That is the heart of communication.
Communication is about whether you get your idea across or not.
Communication must consider both the sender and the receiver.
プレゼンテーションでは、
相手に伝わることを考えなければならない。
1にコンテンツ、2にスキル、
3にパッションと言われる。
中身がなければ良いコミュニケーションにはならないし、
子音や声の出し方、滑舌、論点を整理することも大切。
そして、伝えたいと思うことが必要だ。
You have to think about what you want to
communicate to your audience
when making presentations.
People say that presentations are about
1) content, 2) skill and 3) passion.
If you have no content, you have nothing to communicate,
but you also have to think about pronunciation, projection,
and enunciation, and you have to organize your points.
It’s also important to want to tell people your ideas.
