The One and the Many

マルタとマリヤの話は、
全ての人間への、
自由への招きではないか。
The stories of Martha and Mary are an invitation to freedom
for all people, both women and men.
しばしば対照的な女性像の典型とされるマルタとマリヤだが、
イエスの来訪は、マルタがマリヤとなり、マリヤがマルタとなれるという、
自由な在り方を指し示したものと解することができる。
Martha and Mary have often been viewed as the epitome of contrasting female figures.
But Jesus’ visit can be interpreted to indicate a freedom in which
Martha can becomes Mary and Mary can becomes Martha.
ヨハネ伝8章32節に
「真理はあなたたちを自由にする」とある。
ICUは何よりも真理を追求する、
大学らしい大学でありつづけたい。
真理を追求し、理想に思いをはせる。
その上で、社会のさまざまな困難にユーモアと喜びをもって
立ち向かっていけるICU人が育つことを願ってやまない。
According to John 8:32, “the truth will make you free.”
ICU should continue to be a truly academic university
that seeks the truth above all things.
I hope that the people of ICU will seek the truth, think about what is ideal,
and face the various difficulties in our society with humor and joy.
私は広く深く学ぶのが
リベラルアーツだと考える。
人間とは何か、私たちが今ここにこうしてあるとはどういうことかという、
人間にとって本質的なこと、根源的なことを常に畏敬の念をもって
問い続けるという意味である。
The liberal arts entail broad and deep learning.
What is humanity? Why are we here right now, doing what we do?
The fact that we continue to ask these questions shows
our reverence for the essence and fundamental nature of humanity.
人間が人間であるとは
なんとwonderに満ちたことか。
学生も、教授も、職員も同じ人間として神の栄光をたたえ、ともに賛美する。
このチャペル・アワーが与えられていることを、改めてすばらしいと思わざるをえない。
How full of wonder we are at the fact that we are human.
It is wonderful that people are given this chapel hour,
during which ICU students, faculty, and staff praise and
extol God’s glory together as fellow human beings.
いつも「なくてならぬただ一つ」のものを
第一の関心事とするべきである。
ICUは第一級の良質のminorityに徹する必要がある。
その意味で、世の主流に対してcriticalな存在であり続けるべきなのだ。
ICU’s should primarily aim to be
unique and indispensable.
ICU should devote itself to becoming a first-class,
high-quality rarity among universities,
and should continue to swim against the current of the world.
