献学60周年記念関連事業の最終年度にあたる今年、歴史資料室では、献学期を語るうえで欠かすことの出来ないディッフェンドルファーとトロイヤー両氏の足跡を辿る企画展を10月より開催しました。ICU設立準備の時期、メソジスト・ミッションボード主事でもあったディッフェンドルファーは、北米でのICU募金活動の先頭に立って貢献しました。日米開戦直前の1941年1月に日本を訪れ、いくつかのキリスト教大学を視察してまわりました。その際、多くの時間を割いたのがメソジストの青山学院でした。また、戦後まもない1949年5月にディッフェンドルファーは、トロイヤーとともに、再度日本を訪れ、「新しい大学」のビジョンを日本国内のキリスト者代表たちと分かち合います。そうした日米協調の動きとして実現した同年6月の「御殿場会議」において、ICUが創立が決議されました。

For the final year of the 60th anniversary, the ICU Archives and Special Collections showed an exhibit on Dr. Diffendorfer and Dr. Troyer, two indispensable figures in the founding of ICU. Dr. Diffendorfer, a member of the Methodist Mission Board when preparations started for the establishment of ICU, contributed greatly at the forefront of the fund-raising effort in the US. During his visit to Japan in January 1941, he visited several Christian universities, including Aoyama Gakuin, a Methodist school. Dr. Diffendorfer returned to Japan with Dr. Troyer in May 1949 to share a vision for a new university with leaders of the Christian church in Japan. The Gotemba Conference, where the establishment of ICU was resolved in June 1949, was the fruition of cooperation between American and Japanese Christians.
