Exhibited were satirical prints issued at the time of the Meiji Restoration, between the return of governing authority to the emperor and the surrender of Edo Castle. They were valuable historical documents, but also a repository of the feelings of common people at the time.

Banks’ Florilegium is a set of copperplate engravings of exotic botanical illustrations collected by Sir Joseph Banks and his scientific team when they joined Captain James Cook’s first expedition around the world on HMS Endeavour (1768–1771). The ICU Library houses the complete set of the Florilegium in its collection, and this exhibition will feature prints from the flora of New Zealand.

Kasuri are “splash-patterned” fabrics made by dyeing threads before they are woven. Various patterns, from geometric to pictorial, may be produced by carefully combining dyed and undyed parts of warp and weft threads. This exhibition will feature Japanese Indigo-dyed kasuri.

Decoration for blue and white ceramics is either hand done, in which case no two pieces are identical, or applied with the aid of transfers or stencils, thereby reproducing identical patterns many times over. The latter is referred to as inban, and a term inbande is given to the pottery or porcelain decorated by this method. This exhibition features 430 inbande items selected from the Yuasa Collection.
